Post-op, Post-expect…What to expect and consider post orthopedic surgery

Having an orthopedic surgery? Let’s discuss a few key points everyone should read pre-operatively about the post-operative experience!

1.       Day of Surgery

  • Majority of orthopedic surgeries are now considered a day surgery – that means you will be discharged the same day as your operation.

  • While it will vary from facility to facility and based on the type of surgery you are having – you might be seen by a physiotherapist in the hospital to ensure you are able to safely ambulate under your required restrictions prior to being discharged.

2.       Pain management

  • Follow the pain control schedule recommended by your surgeon.  While everyone tolerates pain differently, it is important to not be chasing the pain i.e. skipping doses of medication and than trying to get control of the pain after the fact.

  • DO NOT compare yourself to others.

3.       Following your post-operative protocol is key

It is typical to see your physiotherapist between 5-14 days post-operatively, depending on your surgery.  Your physiotherapist can ensure you are completing any recommended exercises correctly and ensure the healing process is on track.

4.       Healing takes 1 year

The whole healing process post-operatively typically takes 1 year – however that does not mean you will be in physiotherapy for a year - your rehabilitation process will be dependent on many factors such as:

  • Type of surgery

  • Recovery goals

  • Consistency with exercises and following the post-operative protocol.

5.       Post-operative protocols

  • Working with an experienced physiotherapist can help guide you through the recovery process including walking you through your post-operative protocol.

  • The protocol is the guidelines you will follow post operatively.

  • The process typically involves dividing into phases of recovery, detailing goals and limitations for each stage.

  • A protocol may be very detailed with a week-to-week outline or may be very general only outlining broad restrictions and timelines.

6.       Finding joy in activities post-operative can be the best part!

Having knowledge and expectations about the process of your specific orthopedic surgery can be the most calming part of the process. There may be unexpected bumps in the road, but being prepared and having a physiotherapist to support you along the way can be the key to success and better healing.
